My accessory belt just snapped in my F350. I’m 150km from home and the only belt available nearby is for a single alternator setup.

Would I be damaging anything if I just bypass the second alternator? Will my truck act up as a result of it?

Thanks in advance..

I have done this before when one alternator seized on my last F350, but I did disconnect the wiring on the 2nd alternator. Truck ran fine, truck doesn’t need the 2nd one if you aren’t running any high-draw accessories.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t do it? Anything I should know about?

I’m not running any high-draw accessories.

Just to add to that, which alternator would be the one to keep connected? Do they run in series or parallel? I’m guessing parallel, but I’m curious if there’s a primary and secondary, or if they equally share the electrical load.

From what I gather from the forums, the bottom one is the primary and the top one wont engage until the primary is at full load.

Thanks! Good to know, my 350 is 11 years old now and there’s no telling how new the alternators are - I have a feeling they’re both factory original units.

No reason that I can think of, I’m guessing this is a 6.4L engine? I’m not 100% on how they were wired but on a 7.3L it was fine.

This depends on the belt layout. If your belt layout is the one shown, it will work, but I’d disconnect the wiring from the second alt to make sure it doesn’t go beserk.

It should be fine for you to get home.
